Branding

The Dead Man’s Society is a craft beer brewing company founded by a team of rum enthusiasts wanting to bring their knowledge of rum distillation to the art of brewing beer.

They came to us for help creating a brand that suited their vision of a brand identity and re-establishes what a pirate has historically been. That is a tough, rugged and dangerous set of people. You won’t find any comic relief swashbucklers, landlubbers, or scallywags here.

Developing the Identity
[01]
Dead Man’s Society wanted to develop an aesthetic that was undeniably pirate themed but also avoided any gimmicky pitfalls associated with pirates in the modern world. Their team strictly did not want to add to the comic relief movie trope of the drunkard, swashbuckling pirate.

Designing a Logomark
[02]
“a logo you would see stamped onto the side of a barrel or used on a wax seal”

With the overarching theme of pirates and the colonial era having been established during early ideation sessions, we had a great foundation on which to build a Brand Identity System.

“If a pirate had their own seal, what would it look like?”

Sending the Right Message
[03]
We wanted to capture the essence of rebelliousness, adventure and freedom in the brand messaging and verbal identity.

Designing the Packaging
[04]
The packaging was designed to reflect the dark, grunginess of the pirate-inspired brand identity whilst being visually striking enough to capture the attention of potential customers.
